Discoid Meniscus. - Dicussion: - a thickened and wafer shaped lateral meniscus varient; - discoid meniscus may range from complete disc to a ring shaped meniscus; - occurs in upto 5% of population (but only a % of these are symptomatic) (prevalence may be higher in orientals (15%)); - usually involves lateral meniscus and is frequently bilateral (20% of pts); Discoid lateral meniscus is a congenital condition that is estimated to occur in 4% to 5% of the population 1-4 but has been shown to be as high as 13% in Asian populations. 5 It is the most common abnormal meniscal variant in children. 6 The condition is typically asymptomatic and, therefore, is infrequently diagnosed. 7 The most frequent symptom is pain that usually begins with a minor trauma. From the case: Discoid 2019-08-22 · One element in the differential diagnosis of knee pathology is a discoid meniscus. Discoid meniscus can manifest itself as an abnormal band, medial and lateral discoid menisci in the same knee, If the discoid meniscus is also torn, the surgeon may perform a saucerization and then trim away the torn portion. Some tears can be repaired with stitches, rather than removed. The hypermobile Wrisberg form of discoid meniscus is saucerized if necessary, then stabilized with stitches to sew the meniscus to the lining of the joint. Discoid menisci are a congenital meniscal variant commonly seen in the lateral compartment, with sporadic reporting of medial cases. It is reported to be present bilateral in up to 20% of patients.

If the meniscal tissue is degenerative, as is commonly the case in discoid menisci, surgical excision often performed. A discoid medial meniscus is an extremely rare anomaly. We present 4 cases of symptomatic discoid medial meniscus. Furthermore, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the unaffected knee was obtained in 3 cases, and 1 patient had bilateral discoid medial menisci as well as a unilateral discoid lateral meniscus proven by MRI. Discoid meniscus.

Discoid Meniscus affecting the medial meniscus (inside of the knee) is extremely rare – estimated at 0.1-0.3% of the population. Some authors have reported that on finding a Discoid Meniscus on leg scanned, the other leg has revealed an asymptomatic Discoid Meniscus in 79-97% of people.

What is a meniscus? Menisci are fibrocartilaginous, rubber-like structures situated between the femur (thigh bone) and the tibia (shin bone). What is the function of the meniscus? They allow the rounded end of the femur to closely fit with the relatively flat top of the tibia. A discoid meniscus is present at birth. It occurs when the cartilage does not properly develop, resulting in a thicker disc- or oval-shaped meniscus. The defect most often occurs in the meniscus on the outer (lateral) part of the knee joint.

The lateral meniscus is usually affected, although the medial meniscus may also become involved.
